Equity in the TMP
Transportation equity recognizes that some communities have historically and continuously experienced limited access to opportunities because they have lacked reliable, safe, and adapted mobility options.
It seeks to address those gaps by designing transportation networks that meet the needs of diverse communities, take their voices into account, and grant them all access to the same economic and health opportunities.
The Markham TMP will address transportation equity by considering the experiences of equity-deserving groups:
- Recommending a future transportation network that improves services and areas with high equity needs.
- Prioritizing areas with high equity needs in the implementation strategy for shorter-term implementation.
Examples of some equity-deserving groups being considered include:
- Seniors
- Racialized individuals
- Individuals with low income
